What are the main new features?

As always, the WordPress developers and the community are working hard to fix bugs and develop the WordPress core to incorporate the latest technological advances. In this major update, the big new feature is theintegration of AI into the core. Designed to simplify and standardise the installation and use of AI, thereby avoiding fragmentation across multiple departments. This configuration allows you toset up your AI provider to route all your requests through it, including plugins, themes, the editor, etc.

What about the back office?

• An modernised admin interface (dedicated font menu, more modern widget).
• The visual checks (Goodbye HTML!) are created in a single column using WYSIWYG, so your page is displayed exactly as it will appear, with changes shown in yellow (edited content), red (deletions) and green (additions).
• The performance optimisations (improved rendering of blocks and layouts, media processing and cropping, database queries, lazy loading, etc.).
• An AI integration with connectors and an API (WP AI Client, Abilities API and Workflows API, MCP adapter, and Connectors).

What about the front office?

• A new way of working: real-time collaboration features
• 2 new blocks (Breadcrumbs and Icons)
• An enhanced block editor (mobile menu, show/hide blocks depending on screen size, simplified H1 to H6 headings, improved layouts with indentation – multi-column text – responsive multi-column grids)
• Media: built-in lightbox

The major breakthrough in AI

• You’ll see a new menu: Settings > Connectors.
• By default, popular AI services will be suggested, but you will have the option to connect the ones of your choice (you will first need to download the WordPress plugin for your chosen AI and activate your API key with the AI provider).

How do I update to a major version?

It is strongly recommended, especially if you have a complex showcase website or a WooCommerce site that contains a lot of plugins and a comprehensive and/or customised theme. Even with a small showcase website, it’s always best to carry out a test on a separate instance that’s only visible to you (a development environment is ideal). You’re not immune to an outdated plugin or code that isn’t compatible with the new version of the WP core causing your site to crash. This can save you from any nasty surprises, and you’ll be glad you did it 🤓.
